Waterloo

Live, work, and play in Ontario’s “Smartest City”!

Waterloo is a city in Southern Ontario that has benefited from strong economic growth driven by innovation. The mid-size city has a high quality of life with a diversified community and close location to Kitchener, its “twin city.” Together, along with nearby Cambridge, the cities are called the “Tri-Cities”.

Before the “tech” revolution, Waterloo was mainly associated with insurance companies. They had significant power as one of the main employers in the city. Now, hundreds of hi-tech firms call Waterloo home. Companies like Blackberry were born in the city while others like Shopify, Kik Messenger, Open Text, Oracle, and Google decided to move in. As an innovation think-tank, the city is focused on research. The Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, the Institute of Quantum Computing, and the Centre for International Governance Innovation are just a few examples of how the city is a global leader in scientific research and innovation. Waterloo’s numerous tech-focused incubators specifically designed to help start-up companies reach their full potential adds to the city’s reputation as one of the “smartest” cities in Canada.

There is no doubt that the city is famous for the university that carries its name. The University of Waterloo attracts people from all over the world and its technology graduates keep the city in the global spotlight. Down the road, you will find another world-class university, Wilfrid Laurier University, which is renowned for its music, business, and education schools. In neighbouring Kitchener, the Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning is Ontario’s premier college for trades and technical studies.

While Waterloo is certainly one of Ontario’s brainier cities, residents still enjoy plenty of time outdoors. The Grand River flows through the eastern portion of the city, and Laurel Creek, a large tributary, is surrounded by a spacious conservation area featuring wooded trails, interpretive centres, and dog parks. RIM Park is a large multipurpose sports facility located in Waterloo. Named for RIM (now called Blackberry), the complex features biking trails, soccer fields, tennis courts, ice pads, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, and more.

Waterloo also boasts a vibrant commercial region known as ‘Uptown’. With plenty of unique pubs, cosy cafes, and trendy restaurants, Uptown has become known as a shopping destination for urbanites and foodies alike. The nearby St. Jacob’s farmers market sells a huge variety of fresh, seasonal produce from surrounding farms. Neighbouring Kitchener is a beer-lovers delight, as the home of the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside of Germany.
