5 home improvements to make in 2019

The new year is the time for resolutions, change and home improvements. As home renovations continue to be popular among homeowners, both old and new, the year 2019 will bring more opportunities for home updates.

Home improvements can increase the value of your home and improve your way of life. Your home will change for the better. At the end of the day, updating your home is a worthy investment for the present and for the future.

Here is a list of home improvements to make in 2019. Some are large renovations, and other are small changes you can make, but they are all meant to improve your home.

Living room with natural light

Add more natural light

Natural light is essential for any home. After all, nobody wants to live in a cave. New home developments are taking into account this fact and adding more and more windows and glass to let in the sunlight. As this gets more recognized among home builders, homeowners with older homes should not miss out.

There are two options to add more light to your home. The first is to knock out walls to create more space for the sunlight to enter and distribute evenly. Open concept floor plans are a great way to ensure that no room goes without any light.

The second option is to get new lighting systems if a full layout change is not possible. Thanks to recent improvements in technology, lights that match natural light and tunes to our natural circadian rhythms are available. With this kind of lighting system, knocking down walls is not necessary.

Give new life to your kitchen

Some say kitchens are the heart of the home, and many want one that supports their new year resolutions. We bet there will be growth in kitchen remodelling as wellness and environmental sustainability become trendy topics in 2019.

To improve your kitchen in 2019, you can do four things:

  • Increase the space in your kitchen by embracing an open concept floor plan and adding a kitchen island with new countertops.

  • Make the backyard more accessible by adding a connecting glass door. This will allow the greenery landscape to enter the inside of your home and encourage you to enjoy the outdoors.

  • Use tones that resemble nature for a calm and serene atmosphere like blue, beige and muted greens. Blue has been specially featured as one of the up-and-coming colours of 2019 (just take a look at a home magazine). And to add a little more style, compliment it with metallic colours and saturated hues. Don’t be afraid to add boldness to your kitchen!

  • Add more storage space by remodelling the cabinets.

Smart home

Go smart

Smart homes technology might new, but it is predicted to make an impact in 2019. According to a Nielsen report, 46% of Canadian consumer intent to purchase smart home technologies in the future and 91% think that these technologies are a good deal. A smart home will adjust to your needs, your preferences, and your lifestyle. New technology will upgrade your domestic life to the full advantage.

In your kitchen, you can add induction cooktops that only heat up when touching cookware and smart fridges that even let you know when you run out of milk.

We already talked about how lighting systems have made significant advances. Your home’s lighting system can connect to your smartphone. You will be able to control all the lights (and even anything you plug in!) when you are in your home and when you are out. Or you can add sensors that will turn off the lights if it doesn’t detect anybody in the room. A lighting system like this one can even save you money in the long run!

Smart security technology can connect to your Wifi, letting you monitor and control it with your smartphone. It can notify you of a break-in, a burst pipe, or a fire immediately, and even alert emergency services right away if you wish.

Home tech also extends to thermostats. With a smart thermostat, you can adjust the temperature to your liking at any time of the day without overworking your HVAC. Now, even cooling and heating systems can learn your preferences and most energy efficient settings to save you big bucks on electricity bills.

Living room with white floors

Switch to white flooring

Lighter colours make rooms feel more spacious, and white floors have the same effect. They can be a little tedious to clean, but the advantages are countless. With white floors, you can create a light, clean and airy living space that goes with any style. Whether you go for an industrial, luxurious, or farmhouse look, white floors match with anything. Your furniture and decor will pop. And you can pair the floor with white walls to keep bouncing the natural light around the room or go bold with a dark wall or wallpaper to contrast the white colours.

If your home already has hardwood floors, you can paint over them after sanding the floorboards or apply bleach and a whitewash stain to bare boards. Installing brand new hardwood floors, vinyl tiles, or wood-looking porcelain tiles is another option to create the same effect. For more style, glossy floors with even white tones or a more distressed finish are excellent.

But wood is not the only choice for white flooring. White concrete, white marble, limestone slabs and terrazzo flooring are all great alternatives to achieve the minimalist aesthetic.

Family room

Create a family-friendly zone

Basement renovations are a great project to take on in the new year - and they don’t have to be overwhelming. They can be an opportunity to create a multi-functional space for all the family.

A functional space in the basement is useful for entertainment, spending family time, and for hibernation during the winter months! In a basement, you can fit a washroom, a kitchen, a fireplace, a gym, a playroom, storage and more. There are no limits to what a basement renovation can do.

Natalie Cox from CPI Interiors gives some advice about turning a basement into a useful space:

"Take the time to think about how you want to use your new space, whether it be a kitchen or basement. The space can be designed for you and your family’s immediate and future needs. This will ensure your new square footage gets used!"

The year 2019 will be the year of renovations for some homeowners. For others, it might be the year in which they will become homeowners for the first time. If you are looking for a home, start your search and see if you can include one of these home improvements!
